Enter Italy: Distributors and Visibility in Hair & Beauty
I’m Alberto Montecroci, founder of MDP Hair & Beauty Group, the group behind Il Magazine del Parrucchiere, THE HAIR ICONS Milano, and Hairstylist of the Year. For almost 30 years I’ve worked in communication and business development for the Italian professional hair & beauty industry. I’ve never worked behind the chair myself — my job is connecting brands, distributors and salons.
A foreign brand entering Italy usually faces two separate problems at once: finding a distributor that will actually build the brand, not just list it, and getting known to an audience of professionals who have never heard of you. Solving only one of the two rarely works. A good distributor with no demand from salons underperforms. A well-known brand with the wrong distributor never gets properly stocked. We work on both.
Why Italy is hard to read from the outside
The Italian hair & beauty industry isn’t consolidated into a handful of large chains. It’s made up largely of independent salons, regional distributors, and business relationships built over years, often on personal trust rather than public listings. For a foreign brand without a local network, that’s a real risk: talking to an intermediary who looks like a distributor but doesn’t actually reach professional salons, or signing with an operator whose portfolio is already full of competing brands — and only finding out months later.
The method: how we map distributors
For every operator we add to the map, we verify the same five things we use for any country: distribution scale (sales agents, points of sale, territorial coverage, declared access to salons); brand-building capacity (education, trainers, professional-channel expertise); fit with the brand (product category, channel, type of distribution); portfolio conflict, treated not as an automatic exclusion but as a negotiation point; and the realistic entry model — national agreement, regional network, or a pilot in a specific area.
The advantage we only have for Italy
For a market like Germany, we verify operators from scratch, source by source — recently 67 companies for one client, cross-checked one by one. For Italy, we start from something no outside research agency has: the network MDP has built over almost thirty years with Italian salons, distributors and wholesalers — today over 21,000 up-to-date professional contacts. It isn’t a purchased list. It’s the result of years of editorial and commercial work in the sector. For a foreign brand, that means a faster map to build and a more reliable one, because it starts from real relationships, not just verified websites.
What you actually receive
An Excel database, ready to load into a CRM, where each row is an operator with: company profile and coverage area, existing brand portfolio, potential conflict level, recommended approach, the first question to ask on contact, and the verification source. Along with the database, a summary that explains where to start — national agreement, regional network, or a pilot in a priority area.
Two ways to work together
The map is the foundation — from there you choose how to proceed. Map & Study: you receive the verified database and the qualitative/quantitative report, and your own team takes it from there to contact distributors. Map & Management: we build the map and also handle the first contact and the commercial relationship with the identified distributors on your behalf. Which one makes sense depends on how much commercial structure you already have in Italy — if you have an export manager with time to dedicate to it, the first option is usually enough; if you’re entering a new market with no local presence yet, the second one shortens the timeline.
Getting known: the other half of entering a new market
A distributor map solves half the problem. The other half is demand: salons need to know your brand exists before they ask a distributor for it. This is where MDP is different from a research agency. Il Magazine del Parrucchiere reaches over 1.3 million users, with strong visibility on Google Discover, an audience of independent salons and hairdressers across Italy, and a mailing list of 21,000+ verified professional contacts. We already produce brand-presentation content and sponsored editorial for partner brands, and THE HAIR ICONS Milano is our flagship event — a stage where brands meet the Italian professional audience directly, not through a banner, but through content the audience actually reads and an event they actually attend.
Why through MDP
The distributor map is part of MDP Data & Insights: the same original, verified research we use for our Osservatorio on Italian salons. The visibility side draws on the media brand we’ve built since 1997. We work every day with brands, distributors and salons in the sector, in Italy and abroad.
How it works if you want to enter the Italian market
It starts with a call to understand your product category, priority region and commercial expectations — and whether you need distributor mapping, visibility, or both. From there we build the map with the same level of verification described above, and, if it makes sense for your brand, a visibility plan through our editorial channels and THE HAIR ICONS Milano. We work with a limited number of brands in parallel, because research quality depends on the time spent on each verification, not on speed. Frequently asked questions
Does this only work for hair color and haircare, or also for tools and professional technology?
It works for any professional hair & beauty category. What changes is the type of channel we map, not the method.
Does your database replace a local distributor or importer?
No. It helps you choose the right one, based on real structure and available space for your brand — it doesn’t replace the partner itself.
Does the service also include contacting the distributors, or just the map?
It depends on the option you choose: with Map & Study you receive the database and report and manage contact yourself; with Map & Management we handle the first contact and the commercial relationship on your behalf.
Does “getting known” mean paid advertising?
No. It means editorial content, brand-presentation articles and presence at THE HAIR ICONS Milano — content the professional audience actually reads, not generic banners.
Do I need an office or a representative in Italy already?
No. In fact, not having a local structure yet is often exactly why a verified map and visibility plan matter before choosing a partner.
Can you work in English or Chinese with our team?
Yes, we handle commercial communication in Italian, English and Chinese.
How long does it take to build the map for the Italian market?
It depends on the product category and priority region — we’ll give you a precise timeline after the first call.
