Salon Price List 2026: 7 Mistakes That Quietly Reduce Margin
In brief: a price list does more than tell clients what a service costs. It must protect time, product, expertise and margin. If it does not, a busy salon can still earn less than expected.
One of the most common management mistakes is treating the price list as a static document. It is an economic tool. Every service should answer one question: does this price really cover the cost and leave the margin the business needs?
1. Copying competitors
Competitor prices can provide context, but another salon may have completely different rent, staff costs, product use and service mix.

2. Ignoring chair time
Two 60-minute services do not necessarily cost the same. Colour, processing, rinsing and finishing can use the chair very differently from a haircut.
3. Unclear supplements
Length, density, product quantity and technical complexity change the cost. If the price list does not explain supplements, the salon often absorbs them.

4. Services that are too generic
Words such as “treatment”, “colour” or “reconstruction” are too broad. Clear naming, benefit, duration and inclusions make a service easier to sell and price.
5. Blow-dry included without measuring its weight
The issue is not whether finishing should always be charged separately. The issue is knowing how much time and value it absorbs.

6. Prices stay still while costs move
Products, energy, labour and rent change. A price list needs a periodic economic review, not just an aesthetic update.
7. No connection with hourly chair revenue
Pricing should connect to the minimum revenue an occupied hour must generate. The MDP Method starts from this number and checks whether each service supports it.
A practical weekly check
Take your 10 best-selling services. Record real duration, average product use, team involvement, selling price and estimated margin. The services that absorb the most time for the least return are the first to review.
A strong price list improves client understanding, team confidence and margin quality. That makes it a real business asset, not just a menu.
